What is FLARM?

FLARM (short for “FLARM Traffic Awareness and Collision Avoidance System”) is a device that is used in gliders and other small aircraft to help prevent collisions in the air. It works by detecting other FLARM-equipped aircraft in the vicinity, and then providing the pilot with information on their location and direction of travel. This information is displayed on a screen in the cockpit, and can also be audibly alerted to the pilot. The device uses a combination of GPS and radio signals to determine the location of other aircraft, and can also be configured to work in conjunction with other collision avoidance systems, such as the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system.
